Raphaela Vogel is a virtuoso of staging, a rebel in a fur coat, an audacious dreamer with a very distinct radical aesthetic. For her videos, she sends camera-mounted drones that, like living creatures, fly in circles at dizzying heights over barren landscapes, above grazing flocks of sheep, or in her own studio. Her energetic video montages are underscored by pulsating, piercing sound collages that also power them. In her extensive installations, high tech meets ancient-looking artifacts and trivial everyday objects. Ambiguously and with an aesthetic of the overpowering, Vogel creates a personal cosmos that bears her own signature. The present book resembles a celestial map of this cosmos. It feels like a catalogue raisonné—yet it stands at the beginning of an artistic career.
