    Me in lines ...

With mere finger movements, a man moves parked cars, while a cellist plays on a coat rack in a simple office. In his photodrawings, Christoph Niemann presents his unique view of seemingly everyday scenes. He often paints himself into the pictures. His distinctive glasses, his familiar haircut: that's all it takes for artist Christoph Niemann to come to life in photos. But what actually belongs in a portrait? What characteristics make us unique? In this workshop, we will draw a portrait of ourselves and insert it into real photos.

    Today I am ...

A paintbrush becomes a dress, a folding ruler becomes the plumage of a flamingo, and a handful of dice transforms into a Dalmatian. In his famous Sunday Sketches, Christoph Niemann breathes new life into everyday objects with just a few strokes of his pen. The results surprise us, make us smile, and often tell a completely unexpected story. On our tour of the museum, we explore Niemann's unique perspective on the world. But how do these ideas actually come about? And how does he choose his objects? In the museum studio, we get creative ourselves: we experiment with everyday objects, create our own Sunday Sketches, and invent stories to go with them.

    Abstract Attack

How can a moment like missing the subway be transformed into art? With his series My Abstract New York, Christoph Niemann shows how everyday scenes can be reimagined through minimalist imagery. With clean lines, colorful shapes, and a wink, he turns missing the subway, a cream cheese stain on a tie, or the New York subway map into minimalist eye-catchers.
In this workshop, we will examine Niemann's approach to abstracting everyday scenes and turning them into original illustrations. We will try out for ourselves how colors and shapes can be used to reimagine the familiar through creative “thinking outside the box.”

    ArtLab with Pia Salzer

Our ArtLab workshop series offers a unique opportunity to meet artists in person, learn about their techniques and try them out for yourself.

This time, we have invited the artist and illustrator Pia Salzer to lead an exclusive workshop with you in the heart of the exhibition spaces. During the workshop, we will observe, reflect and, most importantly, draw. Our focus will be on figurative illustration, exploring how the interplay of line and form, combined with a sensitive eye for detail and abstraction, can contribute to authentic illustrations.

Pia Salzer is a Nuremberg-based designer who specialises in illustration and graphic design. She creates visual worlds and graphic design concepts, including brand designs and wall paintings, for companies, magazines, individuals and living rooms. She has previously contributed illustrations to publications including DIE ZEIT, Psychologie Heute Magazin and Brigitte Magazin

Walk & Talk with Friederike Girst

For this special guided tour, the Kunstpalais has invited a guest speaker. This time, it is Prof. Friederike Girst, a graphic designer, professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Nuremberg, art director, agency owner, and, not least, a longtime collaborator of Christoph Niemann. As they walk through the exhibition with museum director Amely Deiss, the two will offer unique insights into Christoph Niemann’s work and the particularities of a designer’s life.

Friederike Girst teaches communication design at the Academy of Fine Arts in Nuremberg. She was art director at the National Post in Toronto and the magazine of the Süddeutsche Zeitung, and has worked as a designer for publications including The New Yorker. In 2013, she founded Studio Umlaut, an agency specializing in communication and design strategies.

Drink & Draw with Jeff Chi

A creative evening in good company—anything goes. In the company of award-winning Nuremberg illustrator Jeff Chi, who’s on hand to offer expert tips and inspiration, we’ll draw, drink, and chat. Whether you’re a beginner or a pro, the focus is on creativity, sharing ideas, and having fun.

All of this takes place in the exhibition “Auf den Punkt,” surrounded by Christoph Niemann’s “Sunday Sketches,” with good music playing—and there’s even a short introductory tour to kick things off.

Jeff Chi (born in 1993 in Kiel) runs a comic blog, and his cartoon “im Hinterkopf” appears regularly in the Nürnberger Nachrichten. In 2022, his debut “Who’s the Scatman” was awarded the Max und Moritz Prize.

Let's dive in and get painting!

Christoph Niemann's exhibition takes us on a journey of discovery, showing us the world through his eyes. In one picture, we see a swimming pool, but not from the front — rather, we see it from high above in the air! The water shimmers blue and someone is swimming in it. In the museum studio, we close our eyes and recall the sensation of cool water on our skin and sunshine on our faces. Then, using special watercolour pencils whose colours blend together on the paper, we paint our own bird's-eye-view swimming pool adventure.

    Artist Talk with Christoph Niemann

Christoph Niemann in conversation with Andreas Platthaus

    Orangery in the Schlossgarten

“The best illustrator of our time is a German who lives in Berlin but works primarily for New York,” wrote Andreas Platthaus back in 2012 in the arts section of the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung. Is that still true? Christoph Niemann’s work has appeared on the covers of The New Yorker, Atlantic Monthly, The New York Times Magazine, and American Illustration. With his unique multimedia approach to graphic design, he continually expands the range of possibilities for creating something entirely his own without overcomplicating it.

Andreas Platthaus, head of the literature section at the FAZ, author of numerous books (including works on comics), and a long-standing member of the Max und Moritz jury, puts Christoph Niemann through his paces in this conversation.
