Julius von Bismarck

A Racehorse for Christmas

2017

Video / performance, Städtische Sammlung Erlangen

The artist Julius von Bismarck leads a horse through meadows and forests. At first glance, it seems certain that it is two people dressed up as a horse. Only after a while does it become clear: there really is a horse under the horse costume. Julius von Bismarck plays with our viewing habits and assumptions that we have internalized due to our cultural background and raises questions about the relationship between humans and animals, but also about power and subjugation. He thwarts our expectations and thus forces us to adopt a different perspective.

His artistic work repeatedly revolves around the position of humans within nature and culture. In his projects, he uses quasi-scientific experiments to humorously question the methods and categorizations of science. The results of his research are visually stunning sculptures, photographs and installations that turn our ideas of nature and culture on their head.
