Verena Issel

January Depression (Remedy)

2020

Collages on paper, framed, Städtische Sammlung Erlangen

Verena Issel's works always respond precisely to their respective surroundings. The artist likes to create strange, cute, exciting or humorous scenarios whose compositions, on closer inspection, turn out to be clever commentaries on socio-political realities. Like the form and materials, the content of Issel's works also varies. From references to Roman mythology to coping with isolation during the coronavirus pandemic, the artist approaches her themes with energetic affirmation and usually with a punchline. The Städtische Sammlung Erlangen owns a selection of small-format drawings by the artist. This series, entitled January Depression (Remedy), was created during Issel's own pandemic-related isolation in her Berlin apartment in early 2020. These drawings incorporate objects from the artist's everyday life.
