Mary-Audrey Ramirez's works are inspired by video and computer games and have an imaginative, apocalyptic aesthetic. Known for her large sculptural and material works, the artist creates experiential spaces in which viewers witness events far removed from our world. The protagonists: handmade, alien-like creatures.
In the work Must Fight to Survive, such a creature with pointed teeth and glowing yellow eyes looks back at us. The artist has embroidered the creature onto a shiny black structure using a sewing machine. This process can almost be described as écriture automatique, as the artist does not make any sketches but starts "drawing" directly with the sewing machine. The colorful threads resemble dashed lines that stand in exciting contrast to the deep black, shimmering, almost liquid-looking surface.
