Shisha, tyvek, polyurethane elastomer, wire, video projector, video file (2:18 min), 177 x 98 x 73 cm, Städtische Sammlung Erlangen
Raphaela Vogel combines artificial and organic materials in her videos, installations and performances using the latest technologies. Using symbolic narratives, she not only addresses gender roles, but also repeatedly draws on cultural references. The artist often appears in front of the camera herself. In this video installation, Vogel transforms an oriental water pipe (shisha) into a tentacled creature with a video projector. The title She Shah is made up of She (English for “she”) and Shah (Persian for “king”). A video of a drone flight is projected onto a scrap of fabric, showing the artist in a ruined church beneath a stone sculpture of a saint.
