Zuzanna Czebatul

Spooning in Love and Anger

2019

Cotton, Yinyl, 120 x 95 x 55 cm, Städtische Sammlung Erlangen

The sculptor Zuzanna Czebatul creates sculptures, some of them monumental, from a wide variety of materials: she masters concrete and bronze as well as foam or inflatable vinyl. She poses questions about power, its symbolic embodiment and how power relations structure our world. Czebatul specifically focuses on less privileged groups and individuals and their struggle for recognition. She addresses queer sexual desire as well as the excesses of turbo-capitalism and its consequences.

Her work Spooning in Love and Anger takes up the spooning position during sex, which allows for a lot of physical contact and cuddling. However, the extremities of the lovers here have become so intertwined in a comic-like manner that the individual bodies are no longer recognizable. It also remains unclear whether the tight embrace is out of love and affection or out of anger at the partners.
