C-print laminated on transparent Plexiglas, framed with colored lace, Städtische Sammlung Erlangen
Mike Bourscheid is known for his humorous performances, expansive installations and eccentric, symbolically charged costumes. In his works, the artist plays with ideas of interpersonal relationships, roles and identities. He questions the reliable interpretation and expressiveness of figure, masculinity, stature and clothing both mischievously and urgently.
Mike Bourscheid himself can be seen in the three photographs. He dances his name with an elongated cloth sausage, which at first glance one would expect to see under a door frame. Confidently and proud, he is wearing pink ballet clothes. With his outstretched foot, he elegantly shoots the photo with a self-timer. The fabric sausage, which can also be interpreted as male genitalia, functions primarily as a dance prop. Mike Bourscheid brilliantly stages, reflects and parodies gender attributions and ideas of male and female bodies and clothing. The colored lace frame completes the presentation with a sympathetic wink.
