Böhler & Orendt

The lit skit

2023

Installation of 6 felt silhouettes and 6 video projections, 12-14 min., Ed. 3+1, Städtische Sammlung Erlangen

Six fire spirits burn slowly, while the soft crackling sound of burning material accompanies the scene. Every now and then, the comic-like mouth of one of the ghosts projected onto the wall opens and malicious laughter can be heard. Nature - it's laughing at us!

The works of the artist duo Böhler & Orendt form an interwoven narrative cosmos. They often refer to each other - for example, the installation shown here is an extension of the work The Sweet Certainty. They repeatedly address the hubris of humans and their attempts to change the world, which result in forest fires, heat records and water shortages. They deal with these themes with a great deal of mischief and black humor and without raising a moral finger. Animals, plants and elements are the protagonists in their rich, visually dense narratives. These characters often ponder: how can we get rid of them, the humans? In The lit skit man is laughed at by nature, although the laughter actually comes from animals. It is tamed, tickled foxes that can be heard here.
