The Municipal Art Collection Erlangen

Artists' Multiples since the 1960s

The Municipal Art Collection Erlangen is part of Kunstpalais and comprises far more than 4,500 works of art. Its focus lies on international artists’ multiples: graphic art, multiples and artists’ books, as well as photography and video art.

Since its foundation in 1966, the collection has grown considerably through donations from artists and private individuals and through acquisition by means of the municipal budget.
The collection aims to track the intellectual history of art after 1945: Be it pop art, op art, land art, concrete art, or art informel—all significant art movements from the postwar period to today are represented in Erlangen.
Every year carefully selected new artworks are added to the collection in order for it to continue representing the latest art developments and contemporary art's most important representatives.
The tasks assigned to the collection are not only its preservation, research and expansion. The displaying and mediation of these treasures is also extremely important to us. The pieces of the Municipal Art Collection are displayed in thematic group exhibitions of Kunstpalais as well as in special presentations of the collection. The new acquisitions of every year get uploaded to our blog and, if feasible, we present them in our exhibition rooms after their arrival.
For now we are lacking a location for a permanent presentation of the collection. Yet Kunstpalais is working with great efforts on its digitization—selected works can already be found on our website along with corresponding texts and images. For a sensuous impression of the quality and variety of the collection, we recommend the catalog of the latest exhibition of the collection titled “Greatest Hits”.
